A television show that depicts Vatican corruption is expected to be shunned by Catholic viewers. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with The Young Pope, starring Jude Law and Dianne Keaton.
Created by Italian screenwriter and film director Paul Sorrentino for Italian pay TV provider Sky, the fictional show tells the story of Lenny Belardo, a young New York archbishop who gets elected as the new pope, taking the name Pope Pius XII. Depicting Belardo as a right-wing pope and the first American pope in history, the show explores internal issues within one of the most powerful institutions in the world.
While controversial, the show has garnered widespread positive feedback during its premiere run in Italy and the UK. The first two episodes even scored a viewership of 953,000 in Italy out of Sky’s 4.7-million subscriber base. That number is triple the size of the viewership of Game of Thrones when it debuted on Italian television.
