Half of adults believe they have no control over their online privacy. Are you in control of yours?

According to a recent study, nearly 45% of US adults feel they have no control over the personal information companies gather online.  But there are a number of things every internet user can do to take charge of their online privacy and security.  If you don’t take control of your online privacy now, you are opening a door for digital eavesdroppers and malicious hackers to access your accounts and steal your identity.

So how can you protect your personal information from being misused? It’s simple: Think before you share personal information! And use  a VPN (Virtual Private Network) like Hotspot Shield when you browse. A VPN creates a secure tunnel between your computer and the server hosting content. In the recent online privacy poll conducted by Ipsos, only 4  out of 10 adults had a good understanding of how to protect their online privacy. One of the  Hotspot Shield team’s goals for 2013 is to help educate internet users about online privacy and internet security. We hope that you can share this information amongst your friends and family to protect their online privacy too.

Here are a few other things you can do: Delete your browser cookies. Read the privacy policies of social networks and other sites thoroughly before sharing information or posting media. Opt out of targeted advertising. Using Hotspot Shield secures your personal information and reduces the risk of identity theft, cybercrime and malware attacks. Make sure to keep Hotspot Shield on at all times, even when you’re not browsing the web. It will keep your communications encrypted making it close to impossible to be tracked online or for hackers to break in.
