Beware of the Mother’s Day Scammer

381861_1172Mother’s Day lands on May 12, which is just a couple of days away. Have you already purchased a present for that special woman in your life? Remember that with every major holiday, there are always malicious scammers who try to take advantage of you. If you’re one to do some last minute online gift shopping for Mother’s Day, make sure to follow these important tips:

  • Buy from trusted online stores. There are many fakes online stores who take your money but fail to deliver your order. Many online flower or jewelry stores are usually fake.
  • Be cautious of E-Card Phishing. Do not open attachments or click on links in suspicious emails and from people you don’t know. Usually these type of emails install malware to your computer.
  • Be smart about discounts. There are many downloadable vouchers or online offers that may sound too good to be true – they are most likely a scam.
  • Use a VPN such as Hotspot Shield. Using Hotspot Shield while making purchases online will not only protect your personal information, but it will also detect malware sites that can harm your computer.

Have you been scammed before on Mother’s Day? What plans do you have with your Mother this year? We’d love to hear your story! On behalf of our team at Hotspot Shield, we would like to wish all of the mothers out there a safe and pleasant Mother’s Day.
